A legislator from West Bengal has sparked controversy by reportedly urging TMC (Trinamool Congress) workers to ensure that only Bangladeshi immigrants supportive of the ruling party are included in the voters’ list. The ongoing revision of the electoral roll in the state has heightened tensions. In a viral video on social media, Khokan Das, the MLA representing Bardhaman Dakshin, is heard stating, “Many new people are arriving from Bangladesh. Some vote for the BJP based on Hindu sentiments. Make sure only those supporting our party are included in the voters’ list.” The video’s authenticity has not been independently verified by PTI.
When questioned about his statement, the MLA explained to reporters, “Illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are entering our area daily. I instructed TMC workers to ensure their names are excluded from the voters’ list.” In response, Soumyaraj Mukhopadhyay, the BJP’s spokesperson for Bardhaman organizational district, suggested that instead of politicizing the issue, the MLA should report illegal immigrants to the Center and the state government. He emphasized the need for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
Disputing the MLA’s comments, Prasenjit Das, TMC’s spokesperson for Purba Bardhaman district, argued that the statements were “misconstrued,” accusing the BJP of having “political intentions” behind the implementation of the CAA.
